WESLEY WEDNESDAY: 26 AUGUST 2026

 This week's Wesley Wednesday quote come from John Wesley's A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, and it focuses on prayer:


"38.     (5) . . . God does nothing but in answer to prayer; . . . Every new victory which a soul gains is the effect of a new prayer.
    "On every occasion of uneasiness, we should retire to prayer, that we may give place to the grace and light of God, and then form our resolutions, without being in any pain about what success they may have.
    "In the greatest temptations, a single look to Christ, and the barely pronouncing His name, suffices to overcome the wicked one, so it be done with confidence and calmness of spirit.
    "God's command to 'pray without ceasing,' is founded on the necessity we have of His grace to preserve the life of God in the soul which can no more subsist one moment without it, than the body can without air.
    "Whether we think of, or speak to, God, whether we act or suffer for Him, all is prayer, when we have no other object than His love, and the desire of pleasing Him.
    "All that a Christian does, even in eating and sleeping, is prayer, when it is done in simplicity, according to the order of God, without either adding to or diminishing from it by his own choice.
    "Prayer continues in the desire of the heart, though the understanding be employed on outward things.
    "In souls filled with love, the desire to please God is a continual prayer. . . ." 

WESLEY WEDNESDAY: 19 AUGUST 2026

 At Ancient Paths Church of the Nazarene1, I have been using the time during the giving of our tithes and offerings, as we are preparing to come to the Table, to help us with our Wesleyan sacramental theology.  I have been doing this by introducing some of the rich Eucharistic Hymns of the Wesley's.  Here are two of my favorites, which we have recently sung:

Glory to Him

1. Glory to Him who freely spent
His blood, that we might live,
And through this choicest Instrument
Doth all His blessings give.

2. Fasting He doth and hearing bless,
And prayer can much avail,
Good vessels all to draw the grace
Out of salvation's well.

3. But none, like this mysterious rite
Which dying mercy gave,
Can draw forth all HIs promised might
And all His will to save.

4. This is the richest legacy
thou hast on man bestow'd:
Here chiefly, Lord, we feed on Thee,
And drink Thy precious blood.

5. Here all Thy blessings we receive,
Here all Thy gifts are given,
To those that would in Thee believe,
Pardon, and grace, and heaven.

O the Depth of Love Diving

1. O the depth of love divine
the unfathomable grace!
Who shall say how bread and wine
God into us conveys!
How the bread his flesh imparts,
how the wine transmits his blood,
fills his faithful people's hearts
with all the life of God!

2. Let the wisest mortals show
how we the grace receive;
feeble elements bestow 
a power not theirs to give.
Who explains the wondrous way,
how through these the virtue came?
These the virtue did convey,
yet still remain the same.

3. How can spirits heavenward rise,
by earthly matter fed,
drink herewith divine supplies
and eat immortal bread?
Ask the Father's wisdom how:
Christ who did the means ordain;
angels round our altars bow
to search it out, in vain.

4. Sure and real is the grace,
the manner be unknown;
only meet us in thy ways
and perfect us in one.
Let us taste the heavenly powers,
Lord, we ask for nothing more.
Thine to bless, 'tis only ours
to wonder and adore.

It has been some time, but I thought I would try to revive the Wesley Wednesday posts with one verse
from a Charles Wesley hymn, "Jesus, the Sinner's Friend," which I sang last night during Evening Prayer:

What Shall I say Thy grace to move?

Lord, I am sin, but Thou art love:

I give up every plea beside -

Lord, I am lost, but Thou hast died.
